Electric Shaver Care Guide

Professional maintenance tips for a lifetime of close shaves

Foil Shaver Maintenance

1. Liquid Soap Deep Clean

For a thorough clean, apply a small drop of liquid soap to the foils and turn the shaver on for 15 seconds. Rinse under warm running water while the motor is still running. This helps emulsify skin oils (sebum) that water alone can't remove.

Warning: Never use a brush on the foil mesh. It is thinner than a human hair and will warp or tear easily.

2. Weekly Lubrication

High-speed oscillating blades create intense friction. Apply a single drop of Wahl clipper oil or a spray lubricant (like Mr. Jack lubricant spray) to each foil once a week. This prevents the metal from overheating and protects the battery from working too hard. The Wahl clipper oil works best on hair clippers and trimmers while Mr. Jack lubricant spray keeps your electric shaver running smoothly.

3. Replacing the "Cassette"

Braun foil shaver heads usually come as a "cassette" (foil and cutters combined), Panasonic parts are seperate. Both brands recommend replacement every 18 months. If you feel "tugging" or "burning," the blades are likely dull and need to be replaced.
We only sell Genuine Braun or Panasonic replacement parts available online or in-store.

Rotary Shaver Maintenance

1. Daily Rinse

Most Philips / Remington rotary head shavers have a "One-Touch" open button in the front of the shaver. For Philips shavers without this button, grip and seperate the 2 halves of the head assembly and proceed with the cleaning. Open the head and rinse the hair chamber under warm water. Leave the head open to air dry completely before your next use.

2. The Individual Disassembly

Once a month, you must open the rotary head and remove the individual retaining rings. Take out the three circular cutters. Use the brush to clean inside the guard tracks where hair gets compressed into "bricks."

Crucial: Keep each cutter with its matching guard. They are "worn-in" together like a key to a lock. Mixing them up will result in a louder, less efficient shave for several weeks.

3. Air Drying

Because rotary heads have deep hair chambers, they trap moisture easily. For faster drying leave the head "flipped open" for at least 4 hours after rinsing. This prevents bacterial growth and that "funky" damp smell.

4. Replacement Cycle

Rotary blades are slightly more durable than foils but should be replaced every 18 to 24 months for Philips/Norelco models to maintain peak comfort. Dull rotary blades are the #1 cause of neck irritation.

Self-Cleaning Systems

Modern high-end shavers come with a cleaning station that automatically cleans, lubricates and charges your shaver. Here is how they work and why you might (or might not) want one.

How It Works

When you dock the shaver, the station pumps an alcohol-based or detergent-based solution through the blades. This removes 99.9% of bacteria, flushes out microscopic hair dust, and automatically applies a lubricant and disinfectant.

  • Braun: Uses alcohol-based cleaning fluids. (Fastest drying, highest hygiene).
  • Philips/Panasonic: Uses detergent/water mixes (Non-flammable, slower drying).

You can order cleaning cartridges for your self-cleaning shaver on our Cleaners & Accessories page.

Cleaning Centre

✅ Pros

  • Convenience: One-button maintenance.
  • Blade Life: Constant lubrication reduces wear.
  • Hygiene: Alcohol solutions prevent "razor acne."
  • Charging: Always ready at 100% power.

❌ Cons

  • Ongoing Cost: Cartridges cost $5-$10/month.
  • Footprint: Stations take up significant sink space.
  • Noise: Some stations run a loud fan for 30+ minutes.
  • Evaporation: Alcohol cartridges dry out even if not used.
The Cost-Saving Strategy: Most cleaning cartridges last 30 cycles. If you manually rinse the "bulk" of the hair in the sink first, the fluid remains clear for longer, preventing the station from alerting you to replace the cartridge prematurely.
